King Diamond helps Volbeat With Their New Album
Kickass Danish rock-and-rollers Volbeat begin to shed some light on their new record, “Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies”, that will be released on April 9thth worldwide. As everyone is talking about how their album is going to be like no other with enriched characters and storylines lyrics of real Outlaws such as: Pearl Hart and some that will be fictional. Their new album will feature solid and legend guest King Diamond, Paul Lamb, and Sarah Blackwood.
Their latest press release . . .
“You can hear the influence of the Old West right from
the start in "Let’s Shake Some Dust," an evocative intro track that
features harmonica from acclaimed blues harp player Paul Lamb. You can hear it
again in the rampaging "Black Bart," which Poulsen describes as “our
country-Motörhead song,” and in the banjos that pepper the chorus of the hard-as-steel
"Doc Holliday," a tribute to the legendary lawman and associate of
the Wyatt Earp gang. But Outlaw
Gentlemen & Shady Ladies is no country & western record. If it was a car, it would be a 1973 Stutz
Blackhawk with monster truck wheels – vintage and modern, stylish and muscular.
You can hear echoes of classic 50s rock’n’roll in the
soaring "Pearl Hart," and the live classic-in-waiting "Lola
Montez." The band’s metal roots
come to the fore via the heavy riffage of "Dead But Rising" and
"The Nameless One," while the ghostly "The Lonesome Rider"
– which finds Michael duetting with Sarah Blackwood of Canadian band Walk Off
The Earth like a modern day Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash – beats with a
rockabilly heart. Elsewhere, they bring
some greased-back energy to "My Body," a cover of the hit song by US
pop-punk outfit Young The Giant, while the brooding album closer "Our
Loved Ones" is the nearest thing they’ve ever written to a ballad. Poulsen
offers, “When I was growing up, my dad and mother played a lot of old records –
Elvis, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry. I love that stuff – it’s a drug somehow. My
own record collection growing up was metal. But I listen to a lot of different
styles of music. If something moves you, I don’t care what it is.”
The track "Room 24" features a massive coup for
Volbeat with the guest appearance from King Diamond, the legendary front man of
Danish metal pioneers Mercyful Fate, and one of Poulsen’s musical idols. He reveals, "I’m a huge fan of Mercyful
Fate and King Diamond. Having King on
the record is a huge privilege. Normally, it’s not something he does. He wrote
his own lines, and it is half my lyrics and half his. It’s a weird, scary
story, and he’s the perfect person for it.”
Additional guests include Anders Pedersen on slide guitar, Rod Sinclair
on banjo and Jakob Øelund on double bass. “

Metallica’s James Hetfield: “Will Not Recreate A Past Memory”
James Hetfield enjoys posting on his instagram account when
he isn’t playing a gig, or sitting down trying to write their newest album. While
they are trying to create new material new shows keeps coming up and as we know
Metallica barely turns down a gig. As Metallica’s frontman James Hetfield has
told Australian rock station Triple M that the band wants to get to work on its
next album and won’t write an album to please fans to go back to older
material, says James stated, "It's like they're asking you to recreate a
memory in their past and you cannot do that . . . We're one of those bands that
doesn't really care what people want. . . We're not going to roll over for
anyone and, you know, we're Metallica for a reason and we're going to keep
doing that."

[INTERVIEW] Apostrophes with Obscure Chaos ZIne
Apostrophes
Interview: Vocalist and guitarist Francisco J. Paz-Guitars
Conducted by:
Kathleen via email
Date: March 5, 2013
Apostrophes, a fairly new Melodic hardcore metal band from Newark, NJ, who are currently releasing their first six song EP asking vocalist and guitarist Francisco J. Paz-Guitars a couple of questions.
OCZ: How are you Francisco? Have you coughed up black shit or getting major headaches since you stopped smoking?
Honestly, only the first few days. For the most part I’ve had insomnia for the last week or so which is now over with. The worst part is that I’ve been a smoker for 20 years so as you can imagine the temptation will never truly leave .It’s going to be a life long struggle it seems.
OCZ: It can be hellish when you quit, did you do it for health reasons or has it been affecting your vocal chords?
Both. My range has increased as well as my durability. My diaphragm used to get tired within an hour of singing and I’m proud to be able to say I can sing for about 3 hours now with minimal effort. As for my health reasons, I was diagnosed with Emphysema about 1 year ago which lead me to quit. I don’t recommend smoking to anyone.
OCZ: So, I read you were born in a taxi, are you good with directions or do you get lost on the road a lot?
This one is very unexpected! Haha ! Actually Javier (J.) is the name of the Taxi driver and Francisco is the name of the retired Doctor the cabbie took my mother to, for she wasn’t going to make it to the Hospital, hahaha!! Plus, I have a great sense of direction and very rarely get lost.
OCZ: Recently, we received a promotional message from a good friend of ours Frank Sommers of Metal Noise to help promote Brutiful Metal Radio compilation with you and another 111 bands on it. Out of curiosity, why do you think the song you chose best represents the compilation album and your band?
Our self titled track Apostrophes represents us best, on the fact that now in days it seems that every metal band is out to reach wrong musical goals. To be brutal and sick, entirely forgetting music is emotion. We have many varied musical influences. We are currently a 4 piece band with the new addition of Tiago Andrade. As we grow, the influences will begin to show on the new upcoming material. Brutiful metal radio actually decided on which track to put in the compilation and I completely agree with their choice, Apostrophes was our first song as a band, and the one with the most heartfelt emotion from our point of view, do to the extremely personal lyrics I put behind an already extremely emotional composition. This song is “All Feel”.
OCZ: Was this the first compilation that you were ever asked to be on and how do you think this will help many others discover new bands?
Yes it is! We can’t ever thank Brutiful Metal Radio and our friends in YAKk enough for the opportunity. This would have never happened without their efforts. No one buys an album from a band they never heard, but If our fans download the Compilation, those other 112 bands will be heard by a new spectrum of listeners and might possibly gain new fans, and of course vice versa.
OCZ: What are some other bands/songs that you would recommend people to check out on this compilation album?
My musical preference might not agree with yours! YAKk’s “Appetite for Flesh” is definitely one track they’ll want to check out!
OCZ: You recorded your six song demo at Mercury Recording Studio with Jerry Ramos, what was your experience like and tell us your experience going in for the first time as a band?
Mercury Recording Studio is amazing! Jerry Ramos is one of the greatest engineers any of us have ever had the pleasure of working with and is as much a part of the Apostrophes sound as ourselves. Mercury Studio is our home. This man welcomed us with open arms without knowing the slightest detail about us or our music. Always a special thanks to Jerry and Mercury Recording Studio for we’ve grown so much as a band in one year. Until we’re signed and our label says otherwise, Mercury is the only studio we work with.
OCZ: Many of your lyrics are based upon your personal life and views that cover failure of the humanity. You’ve been getting some good feedback from three of your songs, “Apostrophes,” “Brothers” and “Satellites” tell us a little about each song.
Apostrophes: Most of the time, people don’t get what they deserve in life. We as individuals, cannot allow failure to determine the remain of our lives. This song is simply saying “Let go and move on”.
Brothers: This is about my biological brothers. Each verse refers to a different one. The first verse is about not having any type of contact with one of them over the period of 2 years, due to a conflict we had. I thought it best to let go for a while, let things settle down so when we meet again, we’d be as brothers again. The second verse is about watching my other brother self -destruct on drugs for 7 long years. Certainly one of the hardest experiences of my life… I’m happy to say that today he is 100% clean, owns his business, has a beautiful daughter and a loving wife.
The meaning behind the chorus is “No matter what. You are my brother, and I love you. I’ll always be here for either one of you cause that’s what family is for. I wish for you the best in life.”
Satellites: This is about Religion, and how through-out history, many have used it over and over again to justify murder, Terrorism, and many other violent needless acts. It’s a shame that humanity has allowed something so pure and beautiful to be so corrupted. I don’t believe in God. I believe in what God is based on.” Love”
OCZ: As a musician what are some of your weakness, obscure or chaotic moments you have faced since you’ve been together for the past year?
Absolutely none. We all agreed when starting Apostrophes that we would be 100% about the music.A drama free environment, where we can create, not destroy. We as friends and bandmates are completely honest and devoted to each other, and I’m sure people will see that chemistry onstage.
OCZ: Will you be working with Juan for Apostrophes future artwork?
Definitely! Juan L. Paz is actually my biological brother and by far the most insane artist I’ve ever witnessed before my eyes. I remember him drawing Disney cartoons when we were little boys in Spain so all my life I’ve watched him grow as an artist. I am proud of him and how far he has come. He doesn’t just do artwork for us. He’s also a huge fan and supporter of Apostrophes. He believes in us as we believe in him.
OCZ: You’ve been in other projects before this and as we all know how that story goes, what are you doing differently this time around that you haven’t done in the past?
Patience. I’ve waited and found the right people. Musicians who want to achive similar goals and dreams. Make music a career not just a weekend activity or an outlet for a personal vendetta. We’re more than a band. We’re brothers in and outside of the band.
OCZ: At first your band was called, "Paz's Project" when and why did you change the name?
It wasn’t called that. On our biography I wrote it in that manner because when starting this band I was the primary song writer. It literally was “My Project”. When I began finding the band members (Clauzenei Santos Jr, Tiago Andrade, and Robert Mendoza) for this project, each of them found their own place in my music, I can’t take credit for their work. These songs are not how I intended them to be, and therefor it stopped being “My project” and became Apostrophes. The name Apostrophes referring to the “Could’ve, Might’ve, Would’ve,” which we all have left behind at one point or another in our moments of human weakness. My lyrics are extremely personal and the name seemed adequate.
OCZ: Some of your members are old time friends of yours, why don’t you introduce them and the craft they master and give a short history how Apostrophes came about.
Clauzenei Santos Jr. is our bassist, hes been in a bunch of bands and actually he’s an incredible Saxophone player. A skill which we hope on using to our advantage on tracks to come. Easily one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever worked with!
Robert Mendoza is our drummer and by far the most dedicated one I’ve ever worked with!
Last but not least is Tiago Andrade. Completely new to NJs Hardcore/Metal scene but an incredible addition to it. Not only is he a great guitar player but he’s also a great presence on stage which you will all come to see soon enough.
These are my brothers. We are Apostrophes. I began Apostrophes because I got sick of bands quitting on themselves over personal and musical differences. I see musical differences as a big plus in any band. Musical differences is what gives a band the possibility of creating something new and unique. I searched for an entire year for the right members for this band because I wanted more than just a band. I wanted a brotherhood, a family, and I’m incredibly happy to be a part of this family.
OCZ: Are you a fan of Frank Zappa and who are some of your influences as a vocalist?
Who isn’t a fan of Frank Zappa? If you don’t know Frank you don’t know music. The man is a legend for a reason! As far as influences: Maynard James Keenan , Chris Cornell, Serg Tankian, Jim Morrison, Jeff Martin, Pete Murray, Steven Patrick Morrisey, Sebastian Bach. This list is endless!
OCZ: Is it hard at times to work around members schedules to book shows since some have their own family and day time jobs?
Always! But we always find a way. It’s every one of our dreams to be able to wake up in the morning and create music. We live for this and feel blessed, that so far, so many people have been reaching out to us offering their love and support. We’ve been preparing ourselves all year for the Summer of 2013! That’s been the big plan from the very beginning and we’re sticking by it! We’re almost there! Fans deserve our 100% and they’ll get no less.\m/
OCZ: Are you working on some merchandise and where can others purchase your EP?
Our EP is not yet completed. We have our personal lives to attend to, and families to look after so it’s been a rough ride. Currently we have 3 songs up on Reverbnation and Souncloud accounts where people can check out what we have so far. However, it will be completed by Summer! We’re scheduled to record the remaining 3 songs for our EP at Mercury Recording Studio in 2 months! When we’re done with our EP it will be up for sale on just about any online store you can possibly imagine, as well as other merchandise to compliment the album.
OCZ: What upcoming shows do you have in the works and where you would like to play this year in NJ and NY that you haven’t already?
Just to name a few: Dingbatz, Starland Ballroom, The Blue room, Saint Vitus, Bowery Ballroom, The trash bar, The Saint, Arlene’s Grocery, and many more! This is not including shows which we’re planning to self promote!
OCZ: Tell us what you think of the Melodic hardcore metal scene in the US and what will you bring to the scene?
I honestly think music has gone downhill. Most metal/Hardcore bands are riding the hate wagon, and most of them seem to be in some sort of competition with every other band. I think it’s childish, and these messages of hate bring nothing good to the world. I grew up in NJ’s hardcore scene in the 90s when there was nothing but love and respect for each other. Supporting bands Such as E Town Concrete, Ill Nino, Point 4 Hope, Face, and many others, they were at our very level in the scene! We stand for love. We stand for respect. We stand for positivity. I think we’re going to bring people together with it and provide an atmosphere full of emotions for our fans as a live band. I think we’re going to bring back what has been lost in NJ’s Hardcore scene. Family.
OCZ: Thanks for the interview, how will you end this interview that others will remember you by?
Be ready for The Summer of 2013! This is what we have been working for! This is our year! Love to all of you from Apostrophes! \m/

[INTERVIEW] Metal Thunder Radio with Obscure Chaos Zine
Interview with:
Brian, Scott & Ron
Conducted by:
Colleen via email
Date: 3/5/2013
Hello, Dollfaces, thanks for this interview. I have
seen you posting on my metal sister and founder of Obscure Chaos Zine on her
personal page and now the zine pages as well, Do you feel having good friends
is a good way to promote your station on their pages and has anyone got annoyed
that you have posted on their page? What pages have you found most supportive
to help Metal Thunder Radio out?
SCOTT - I would say that
the guys from Prime Evil and of course Ed Farsthey and Wendigo Productions have
been the biggest help to us in the (almost) year we’ve been around. But, the
support from all ends has been great! Nobody to my knowledge yet has complained
about us posting on their pages. Hopefully it stays that way!
BRIAN – Yep definitely
agree with Scott that Prime Evil, Ed & Wendigo have been in the forefront
of support, but I would also say the Mike from MP Project, Mike from Lardhand
as well as Unworked Apparel have been right there as well. As far as Facebook
pages I would say of course Obscure Chaos Zine, RMHO, LadySkullShine
Entertainment, Love of Metal & Yvonne’s World just to name a few.
RON - I would not want to
forget anyone but, we do have many friends who support & promote us. One
that comes to mind is Gini from the http://www.examiner.com who wrote a very
awesome article about the live show broadcast. I don't know of anyone who has
been annoyed by us posting on their page.
Your station hasn’t been around for a very long time
but it’s making a good connection in the metal scene. Reading your profile page
it states, “Our weekly, live online radio show airs every Tuesday at 9pm EST.”
and you’re on for about an hour and the rest of the week it’s quite, why? Did
you think about having an auto-dj for the remaining days or maybe getting other
Dj’s to join your team?
BRIAN – I
wouldn’t want to have an auto DJ. I’ve see a lot of stations that have an auto
DJ just so it can run 24/7 but I can’t see that people would be tuning in at
4am. To me the one hour live show we do should be an event for the bands, where
they know when they will be played & can promote it. With an auto DJ the
bands would never know when they would be played. As far as only being on once
a week, it’s tough to find time to do this since we all have jobs &
personal commitments.
SCOTT -For me it’s mainly a
time constraint thing, I run my own business so I’m tied up with work
obligations seven days a week for the most part, and because of that, have very
little free time.
RON - We all have day jobs
and it takes a fair amount of time the put together our 1 hour show. We are
just getting started right now but both of those suggestions could be
possibilities in the future.
Do you find it expensive to run a station and is this a
reason you have t-shirts to help cover the cost of the shirts and the station?
Has it been helpful? Wear can one purchase a shirt from?
Klank |
BRIAN – There definitely is
a cost associated with running the station but I try to find the most cost
effective ways to do things. There was a lot of research to find the most
inexpensive way to stream, we use older computers & have a primitive phone
system but it all works & that is what is most important.
RON - Yes the t-shirt sales
are meant to alleviate the cost of running the show, but to date we've sold one
(1) shirt!!!!!! A shirt can be purchased by going to the merchandise page on
http://www.metalthunderradio.com
What can one expect when they tune in?
RON - Listeners can expect
to have an awesome time listening to sick underground metal music and 3 guys
(plus the occasional guest) talking about metal and other things, but mostly
metal.
SCOTT - People can expect
the best in underground metal from around the world. We don’t discriminate
either, if it’s halfway decent, we’ll put it on our show! Some people have
asked why we don’t play Slayer, old Metallica, etc and the bottom line is,
those bands don’t need our help, and you can hear them on mainstream radio. All
though we will pull out some rare live Exodus and Slayer from back in the 80s
from time to time.
How many listeners to you have at this current moment
and who are your biggest supporters?
BRIAN – Listeners to the
live show vary week to week but each show is also available on iTunes & I
know there are a lot of people that download it. As far as our biggest
supporters, aside from those listed above (MP Project, Lardhand, Ed, Prime Evil
etc.) I would have to say that Adam from Toronto & Fredrik from Sweden (CEO
at Concept Sweden Management) are among our biggest supporters. They are always
in chat during the live show & help keep things fun & interesting.
You’re bio also states, “Our playlist is comprised of
the best underground bands from around the world” today many have a different
concept to what “underground” stands for, in your words what does it mean to
you and what styles of music do you accept for your station?
SCOTT - Underground to me
means music that doesn’t have the benefit of mainstream radio play, or
mainstream promotion. Bands that still have to do everything themselves,
promotion, merchandise, etc. This doesn’t mean that a band can’t be signed to a
label and still be underground. Many great bands that we feature on the show
every week are in fact signed to independent labels but are still considered
underground bands.
RON - Just bands who are
trying to get their music out there. They don't have a big label promoting
their music. Some of the bands are signed to a label but the band still does
most of their own promoting and stuff. We accept metal of all types: thrash,
death, power, black, hardcore, plus more...
BRIAN – Echoing what Scott
& Ron said, underground bands are bands that are still pushing themselves.
Whether signed or not, they don’t have a big promotional machine behind them.
They are still out there selling their own merchandise, handing out fliers for
their upcoming shows & basically funding their own efforts. As far as the
music we accept, we take all kinds of metal but we’ve also received a good
amount of rock & hard rock songs as well. To the point that we’ve had two
separate special rock shows.
Where can bands send their material too and what format
do you take?
RON - There are a number of
ways that bands can get us their music. Facebook
(facebook.com/metalthunderradio), Twitter (@metaltradio), Email
(contact@metalthunderradio.com), and the Contact Us page on
http://www.metalthunderradio.com All song submissions should be in the mp3
format.
Being that your station runs for a short time it makes
it harder to keep the bands in a regular rotation. How often will these bands
submitting their material be heard? How are you working that out or is it a
onetime deal?
RON - That depends of how
many songs they have submitted. Of course the more songs they submit the more
they will be heard.
BRIAN – Each week we try to
have as many new bands as possible, but we will always repeat a couple of songs
& like Ron said the more songs they have submitted they more they will be
played. We also have each show on our website along with each band that we
played that night with links to their pertinent sites so even if we might have
only played a band once or twice, visitors to our website can always find
them.
What bands have you heard for the first time and now
you have become a fan of?
SCOTT - There are a lot of
bands that we feature that I consider stellar, some that come to mind right off
the top of my head are Bull Riff Stampede, Klank, Dead Label & Slasher.
RON - There are too many to
list. There are a lot of talented bands
that are not being heard. That is the whole point of our show, giving these
bands a venue to be heard.
BRIAN – Adding to the bands
Scott mentioned I would have to say the bands that I think of right away are
Estampida, Kill Syndicate, Tellus Requiem, Diztord, Gormathon.
Have you done live band interviews?
SCOTT - Yep, we sure have.
Did a live phone interview with Mike Usifer from Prime Evil, and we also did a
taped phone interview with Tord from Sweden (Diztord).
RON - Plus a number of
on-air call ins. We also interviewed all
the bands at the live broadcast show (King from Deceased, Ronnie & Danny
from Malignancy, Mike from Sacrificial Blood, Mike from Prime Evil, Drew from
Midnite Hellion, Duke & John from Thorn Constellation) .
Did you book the show or just hosted the show On
January 12, 2013 St. Vitus Bar in New York with Thorn Constellation,
Sacrificial Blood, Midnite Hellion, Prime Evil, Deceased, and Malignancy? How
did the live streaming go with your listeners and how was the overall turn out?
Are you going to do another show with Wendigo productions?
SCOTT - That show at St
Vitus was a collaboration between us and Ed from Wendigo Productions. We came
up with the bands and Ed worked his magic and got them all to agree to do the
show!
BRIAN – The live show
really went well considering we were kinda doing this blindly. We didn’t have
any point of reference of doing this before. The club was completely sold out
& the online audience was phenomenal.
It was great that while we were interviewing various band members,
people listening online were also asking questions via chat. It was a great way
for the bands to talk to their fans who were not in NY. In some cases we had
questions coming in from fans in various countries around the world. We did
have a bit of a buffering issue but overall it went off without a hitch. I am
sure we will be doing another show sooner rather than later.
What are your own experiences in the metal scene, band,
promoters, club owners, etc.? What styles of music do you enjoy most outside of
the station?
RON - I was the lead
guitarist for Shadow of Demise & let’s just say I have a very eclectic
Ipod!!
BRIAN – I was the bass
player for Sudden Fear. We played every place we could throughout the 90’s
& came across a plethora of promoters & club owners. Some good people
& some assholes. I’m sure Scott & I could spend hours telling stories
of our time with SF but we’ll save that for another interview. As far as music
I listen to, mostly metal but also some rock & classic rock.
Who came up with the idea of doing an on-line radio
station and who came up with the name?
BRIAN – I had the idea of
doing a radio show after I had gone back to school for broadcasting. They tell
you that the best way to get into radio is to have an internship & build a
demo reel to hand out to stations. Since I have a full time job & a family
I didn’t have any time for an internship so I decided to try to do something on
my own. I came up with the name & had asked Scott if he wanted to do it
with me. After a few shows Ron came down to hang out & it clicked so he
quickly became part of the team.
The radio industry is
constantly changing & right now more & more people are moving to online
radio & podcasts. So we’ll see how far we can take this.
Did you always want to be a DJ or did it just happen?
BRIAN – It actually just
happened. I originally went to broadcasting school to learn the behind the
scenes aspect of radio & to get into production.
So far what is one of your funniest moments since you
started the station?
BRIAN – I would say the
funniest thing that happened so far was when Scott couldn’t make it to the show
but was able to call in for a few minutes. While he was talking the computer
crashed & his last word just kept repeating until the computer shut itself
off. That moment has made it’s way into our intro & will live forever as
the day that Scott became a robot.
What do you think is the single most important thing
for a new metal band to do to promote themselves?
MP Project |
RON - Hustle. Don't just
lay back and think everything is going to be handed to you. Also support. The
scene, other bands, and anyone who is trying to help you.
SCOTT - In my opinion
(Scott) the single most important thing a band can do to promote themselves is
write great music. And get out there and play! And don’t just rely on others to
promote your shows, get out there and hit the pavement and promote youselves!
Utilize the internet, facebook, twitter, etc. Get as many people to hear your
music as possible. To sum up, bust your ass day in and day out! Don’t be lazy
and think you’re too good for the grunt work. No, you’re not. And if you want
to have a shot at making it, you better be willing to bust your ass! Ok, that
was more than one thing haha
Keep Rockin’ All Knight and Good Luck with your
station. I’ll have to stop over one evening. Tune in Every Tuesday Night Live 9 p.m. EST. . . Any last words for our readers?
RON - Keep the metal scene
alive.
